Three ways the test is used
- As a gate to interview. Applicants are ranked on the UCAT, sometimes with school results, and the top group is invited to interview.
- As a share of the final ranking. The UCAT is given a fixed weight beside school results and the interview.
- As a threshold or tie-breaker. You need a minimum, or the UCAT separates applicants with the same school result.
The difference matters when choosing where to apply. A very high score helps most where the test is a gate or carries real weight. A middling score hurts least where it is only a threshold.

Medicine without the UCAT
- James Cook University states that it does not use the UCAT. It selects on academic results and an interview.
- Bond University runs its own selection, with a psychometric test and an interview, and does not list the UCAT among its requirements.
- Graduate-entry medicine at universities such as Melbourne and Sydney is entered after a first degree, generally with the GAMSAT, a different test.
Things to check for every university on your list
- Does it use the total, or the subtests separately? Does it use Situational Judgement?
- Is there an interview, what kind, and when? Many are held in late November and December.
- Are there extra steps, such as a written application or another test?
- Is there a separate pathway you qualify for, such as a rural or Indigenous entry scheme?
- Do you apply through the state admissions centre, directly to the university, or both? The UCAT is separate from all of these.
If you are still deciding whether your result is competitive, scores and percentiles shows where it sits in the field.
