Applying for 2028 entry?

This page sets out the rules for entry in 2027, which used the 2026 test. Universities usually publish the next year's rules in the first half of the year. Most carry over with small changes, so this is a sound guide to what to expect, but read the Joint Medical Program's own pages before you apply.

Courses

  • Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program), five years full time.
  • Taught at Newcastle and the Central Coast through Newcastle, and at Armidale through New England.

How the Joint Medical Program uses the UCAT

  • The total of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning is used. There is no threshold on any single subtest.
  • Situational Judgement is not part of selection for 2027 entry.
  • The cut-off for an invitation is set after applications close and depends on the field. Rural and non-rural cut-offs differ.

Published scores and cut-offs

  • The program does not publish UCAT cut-offs.
  • There are 170 places across the two universities, and more than 3,000 applicants.

Cut-offs are the result of each year's field, not a target set in advance. They move from year to year. Scores and percentiles shows where a total sits among all candidates.

School results and subjects

  • A minimum ATAR of 94.3.
  • A minimum ATAR of 85 for applicants who completed Year 12 at a rural or remote school.
  • No subjects are required.

The interview

  • A Multiple Skills Assessment: several eight-minute stations, each with an assessor.
  • An online Personal Qualities Assessment is completed on the same day.
  • Domestic applicants attend in person at Newcastle or Armidale, from late November to mid December.

How to apply

  • Three steps: sit the UCAT, lodge the program's own online application, and apply through UAC.
  • For 2027 entry, the direct application and the UAC application both closed on 30 September 2026.
  • Offers were scheduled for 8 January 2027.

The UCAT is booked separately from your university application, months earlier. See the UCAT dates and fees.

Places

  • 170 places across both universities. Your preferred location is not guaranteed.

Rural, Indigenous and other entry pathways

  • Rural and Remote Admissions Scheme, with a target of 30% of the intake and a lower UCAT threshold.
  • Communities Entry List for residents of the Hunter New England, Central Coast and Mid North Coast health districts, with a lower UCAT threshold.
  • Regional Excellence Pathway: an ATAR of 99.00 or above from a local school, with the UCAT waived.
  • Miroma Bunbilla Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, with no UCAT required.

International applicants

  • International applicants sit the UCAT ANZ, not the ISAT, and apply directly to Newcastle.

Also worth knowing

  • The separate direct application is compulsory. A UAC application alone is not enough.

What this means for your preparation

Whatever the weighting, a higher UCAT total widens your options, because most applicants apply to more than one university. Start with the twelve-week plan, and try the free practice questions to see where you stand.
