What does UCAT ANZ stand for?

University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand. It is the admissions test used by most school-leaver medicine and dentistry courses in the two countries. What is the UCAT ANZ?.

Who can sit the UCAT ANZ?

Anyone in their final year of secondary school or beyond: Year 12 in Australia, Year 13 in New Zealand, or anyone who has finished school. Students in earlier years cannot sit it.

Can I sit the UCAT in Year 11?

No. In Australia you must be in Year 12 or have finished school. Year 11 is a good time to learn the format and try a few questions, but the test itself has to wait.

How many times can I sit it?

Once in each year's cycle. If you apply again in a later year, you sit it again that year.

How long does a UCAT result last?

One admissions round. A result from the 2026 test counts only for university entry in 2027.

How much does the UCAT ANZ cost?

In 2026 the fee was $335 for a test sat in Australia or New Zealand, or $240 with an approved concession. Late booking costs more. Dates and fees.

When is the UCAT ANZ held?

Testing runs from the start of July to early August. You choose your own date and time within that window when you book. Bookings open in early March and close in mid May. Dates and fees.

How long is the test?

Just under two hours: 184 questions across four separately timed subtests, with a short instruction screen before each. There are no breaks.

Is there still Abstract Reasoning?

No. Abstract Reasoning was removed from the test in 2025. The four subtests are Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Situational Judgement.

Is there negative marking?

No. A wrong answer scores the same as no answer, so you should answer every question, guessing if you have to.

Can I use a calculator?

Not your own. A basic calculator is built into the test screen. It has four functions, percentage, square root and memory, and it works through a sum in the order you type it. Calculator and keyboard shortcuts.

What is a good UCAT score?

It depends on the university. In 2026 the average total was 1,964 out of 2700, and the top tenth of candidates scored 2,340 or more. Scores and percentiles.

When do I get my result?

You are emailed within about 24 hours of sitting, and your score report is then in your account. Universities receive results directly in early September.

Do I send my result to universities?

No. Universities in the UCAT ANZ group receive it directly. You still need to apply to each course through the usual admissions centre or the university.

Does Situational Judgement count?

At some universities and not others. Several say they do not use it, some use it to break ties, and some use it as a minimum. Check each university you are applying to. Universities that use the UCAT.

Can I get extra time?

Yes, if you have a disability, learning difficulty or medical condition and your application is approved. Versions with 25% extra time, rest breaks, or both are available. You must apply before you book. Extra time and access arrangements.

Is the UCAT ANZ the same as the UK UCAT?

The two tests are very similar, but they are run separately. A UK result cannot be used for Australian or New Zealand universities, and you cannot sit both in the same year.

Can I sit it at home?

No. It is sat in person on a computer at a test centre. There are centres across Australia and New Zealand and in some other countries. Test day.

How long should I prepare?

Most students do well on ten to twelve weeks of steady work, about an hour on most days, moving from untimed practice to full timed mocks. How to prepare.
