Extra time and access arrangements

If a disability, learning difficulty or medical condition affects how you sit tests, you can apply to sit a version with extra time, rest breaks or other adjustments.

Facts checked against official sources on 3 October 2026.

Who they are for

Access arrangements are for candidates who would otherwise be at a disadvantage: for example because of dyslexia or another specific learning difficulty, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a vision or hearing impairment, a physical condition, or a medical condition that needs managing during the test. If you have adjustments for school exams, you are likely to have grounds to apply.

The versions of the test

The questions are the same in every version. What changes is the time on each subtest, and whether you may take rest breaks that stop the clock. The instruction screens are the same length in all of them.

Other adjustments

Extra time and rest breaks are not the only adjustments. Other needs, such as keeping medication or medical equipment with you in the test room, are requested through the same application and considered on the evidence you provide.

How to apply

  1. Create your account on the official site first.
  2. Complete the access arrangements application and attach your supporting documents, such as a report from a specialist or a letter from your school about adjustments you already receive.
  3. Wait for the outcome before you book. It usually takes about five business days.
  4. Book your test. Extended sessions are longer, so there are fewer of them: book early.

Apply early

Applications open in February and close in mid May, at the same time as bookings. If your evidence needs a new report from a specialist, start in the summer holidays. See the dates.

Practising with extra time

Practise at the timing you will sit. A pace learned on the standard clock does not transfer neatly to a longer one, and the reverse is worse. PrepForDoc mocks have a 25% extra time setting, which matches the UCATANZ SEN version, with the same timed instruction screens.
