Applying for 2028 entry?

This page sets out the rules for entry in 2027, which used the 2026 test. Universities usually publish the next year's rules in the first half of the year. Most carry over with small changes, so this is a sound guide to what to expect, but read UNSW's own pages before you apply.

Courses

  • Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine, six years full time, at Kensington.
  • Rural pathway places are mostly at the Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga campuses.

How UNSW uses the UCAT

  • A minimum of the 50th percentile for general and Gateway entry, and the 40th percentile for the rural pathway.
  • Situational Judgement is not considered.
  • Interview invitations are based on ATAR and UCAT.
  • The final ranking uses academic rank, the UCAT total and the interview. UNSW says the three are not averaged: a high score in one does not make up for a low score in another.

Published scores and cut-offs

  • Lowest selection rank for the 2026 intake: 99.75 for local applicants, 94.25 for Gateway and 91.05 for rural entry.
  • UNSW does not publish UCAT cut-offs.

Cut-offs are the result of each year's field, not a target set in advance. They move from year to year. Scores and percentiles shows where a total sits among all candidates.

School results and subjects

  • ATAR of 96.00 or above for general entry, without equity adjustments.
  • ATAR of 91.00 or above for the rural pathway and the Gateway scheme.
  • English is assumed knowledge. No other subjects are required.

The interview

  • A structured interview with two interviewers, face to face.
  • For 2027 entry: Kensington from 17 to 22 December 2026 and in mid January 2027; rural applicants from 23 to 27 November 2026 at the rural campus nearest home.
  • About 350 general applicants are interviewed.

How to apply

  • Apply through UAC, and complete the Medicine Application Form inside the UAC portal.
  • For 2027 entry, UAC applications opened on 8 April 2026 and the deadline for both was 30 September 2026.
  • First offers were scheduled for 8 January 2027.

The UCAT is booked separately from your university application, months earlier. See the UCAT dates and fees.

Places

  • UNSW does not state its total intake. About 28.5% of Commonwealth supported places are bonded.

Rural, Indigenous and other entry pathways

  • Rural Entry Admission Pathway, for applicants who have lived in a rural area for five consecutive or ten cumulative years.
  • Indigenous Entry Scheme, which does not require the UCAT and includes a residential pre-medicine program.
  • Gateway Entry Scheme, for students from Gateway schools or lower socioeconomic areas.

International applicants

  • International applicants may submit either the UCAT ANZ or the ISAT.

What this means for your preparation

Whatever the weighting, a higher UCAT total widens your options, because most applicants apply to more than one university. Start with the twelve-week plan, and try the free practice questions to see where you stand.
